"No Surprises Act" and "Good Faith Estimate"

This notice is for current and potential future clients:

Congress enacted a "No Surprises Act" on January 1, 2022.  This is a federal law that protects patients with private health insurance from receiving surprise bills from health care providers. You can read more about it here

I am "out of network" for all insurance companies. During our initial phone consultation, I state my fees. When I need to raise them, I will always provide notice well in advance. Additionally, I am happy to discuss my fees with you at any time. Feel free to bring up the topic if you ever feel the need to do so.

It is extremely unlikely that the surprise bills consumers are protected from in the Act would ever impact our work together. There will never be a time when you "inadvertently" receive care from me. Every time we meet in person, via telehealth, or over the phone, it will be either at your request or, less commonly, an explicit suggestion of mine. A suggestion that you can agree with or not, of course.

If we are currently working together, you are already aware of my fee per session. Typically, we meet weekly until your crisis or symptoms have abated, at which time you can decide to meet twice a month. After a period of meeting twice a month, some clients then prefer to shift to "maintenance" whereby we meet once a month or even as-needed. The frequency of meeting is largely determined by your needs and preferences, and is something we can discuss at any point when you may want more or less support. And, of course, the annual cost of your therapy is determined by my fee multiplied by our number of sessions per year.   Therefore, you will not ever receive a "surprise bill" from me.

As always, please reach out to me with any questions or comments!
